Stopping corrosion before it cracks your structure

The steel inside concrete is what gives it strength. When it corrodes, the whole structure is at risk.

Reinforced concrete works because of a partnership. The concrete handles compression, and the steel embedded inside handles tension. Together they make a material strong enough to build almost anything. But that partnership depends entirely on the steel staying sound. When the reinforcement starts to corrode, the strength of the whole structure is on the line, and the damage often hides until it is well advanced.

How corrosion takes hold

In a healthy structure, the concrete protects the steel. The alkaline environment inside good concrete forms a passive layer that keeps the steel from rusting. Problems begin when that protection breaks down, usually because water and chlorides reach the steel through cracks, porous concrete, or insufficient cover. Coastal salt air and persistent moisture, both common in Mozambique, speed this up considerably.

Why it is so destructive

Here is the part that makes corrosion dangerous rather than just unsightly. As steel rusts, it expands, taking up several times its original volume. That expansion creates enormous pressure inside the concrete, and that pressure cracks and breaks the concrete apart from within. The cracking then lets in more water and more chlorides, which feeds more corrosion. It is a cycle that accelerates as it goes, and each stage makes the structure weaker.

The warning signs

  • Rust-coloured stains bleeding out of the concrete surface

  • Cracking that follows the line of the reinforcement beneath

  • Spalling, where the concrete cover breaks away and exposes the steel

  • Hollow-sounding areas where the concrete has debonded from the steel

How it is properly addressed

Stopping corrosion is not a matter of patching over the visible damage. That hides the problem and lets it continue underneath. Proper repair means removing the damaged concrete, treating or replacing the affected steel, applying the right protective measures, and reinstating the concrete with materials chosen to last. Done correctly, it stops the cycle and restores the structure. Done as a cosmetic patch, it simply delays a bigger bill.
