Overview:

This project addressed advanced corrosion and structural deterioration in the reinforced concrete columns and slabs of the Bank of Mozambique building. Years of carbonation and chloride ingress had compromised load-bearing elements and exposed the reinforcement steel, putting long-term stability at risk. The objective was to restore full structural capacity while protecting the concrete against future corrosion.

Approach:

We began with a detailed condition survey and concrete testing to map the extent of corrosion and reinforcement loss. Deteriorated concrete was carefully removed to expose the affected steel, which was cleaned, treated and reinforced where required. High-strength repair mortars rebuilt the original profiles, followed by corrosion-inhibiting and anti-carbonation coatings to safeguard the repaired areas.
